About Writing with Finesse

At the heart of Writing with Finesse is a simple belief: that writing is thinking made visible. Writing is not simply a skill to be mastered, but a way of thinking, shaping and articulating complex ideas with clarity and precision and I believe that all students can learn to write with finesse when the process is made explicit. It is through writing that students learn to engage deeply with literature, to refine their interpretations, and to express their understanding with confidence and conviction.

Through our development of the IQTVE framework (Idea, Quote, Technique, Verb, Evaluate), we have embedded an evidence-informed approach to the explicit teaching of writing that is intrinsically linked to the study of literature. Writing is not treated as a separate skill, but as the means through which students demonstrate their conceptual understanding and interpretation of texts. This creates a coherent and consistent structure that supports students in crafting perceptive, insightful and evaluative responses.

We believe that creating a genuine culture of writing in English requires more than instruction, it requires modelling, collaboration and intellectual curiosity. As teachers, it's important that we write alongside our students, make our thinking visible and demonstrate how complex ideas can be shaped into precise and purposeful analytical expression.

Writing with Finesse was created to share our explicit approach to writing more broadly. Each resource reflects a deep conceptual and technical textual knowledge and a strong understanding of the demands of crafting high-level HSC responses. By offering carefully modelled examples, scaffolded activities and clear conceptual frameworks our resources are designed to support both teachers and students in achieving excellence.

At its core, Writing with Finesse is also about building a shared professional space for English teachers, a community grounded in collaboration, intellectual curiosity and a commitment to refining our craft. Writing is not something we teach in isolation; instead, we model, discuss and develop strategies together. Through these resources our aim is to support teachers to be confident, equipped and inspired to teach writing with precision, while contributing to a broader culture of excellence in English education.

  • "The IQTVE framework gave me a clear structure for teaching students how to write analytically, it has strengthened my own practice and given my students confidence in constructing sophisticated responses. My students also enjoy this structure because it has given them clarity and confidence. This is some of the most valuable professional learning I have undertaken."
